ED101, Inc. Recognized as an Accredited NGO with the United Nations
May 2010

ED101, Inc. has been awarded consultative status as an accredited non-government organization (NGO) with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.

According to Intergovernmental Negotiations and Decision Making at the United Nations: A Guide (Second Updated Edition), by the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) with Gretchen Sidhu (2007):

"Accreditation is not an automatic privilege; organizations must meet certain criteria to obtain it and abide by certain guidelines to maintain it. Groups risk losing it when they fail to work within these parameters, or engage in conduct such as a politically motivated act against a Member State or the promotion of activities that violate the spirit of the UN Charter.

There are two basic forms of accreditation to the intergovernmental process: temporary for conference processes or ongoing, which is normally referred to as consultative status.

NGOs that are seeking a regular presence at the UN, or a more permanent relationship, can apply for ongoing status or consultative status with ECOSOC or one of the programmes, funds or autonomous specialized agencies.

Organizations and groups with consultative status are usually invited to attend special UN meetings such as world conferences without having to submit to the approval process for accreditation. However, they are required to complete any registration or pre-registration conditions/requirements."

Enough is Enough! Rally for Education
April 14, 2010 - Columbia, SC

In support of South Carolina students and teachers, ED101 attended the Enough is Enough! Rally for Education on the State House grounds. A budget proposal before the SC General Assembly that would cut funding for schools by an additional six percent, or $85 million. That would return state spending for schools to 1995 levels.

Educators statewide are calling on the legislature to increase the state’s cigarette tax to the national average, eliminate caps on sales taxes and enforce online sales tax collections to fill the budget gaps and ensure funding for the future of all SC students and teachers. For the kids: "No more cuts, mandates or excuses. Enough is enough!"

Introducing ED101 Engage: Live Chat Series
A Discussion on the Use of Restraint & Seclusion in Schools
11 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010

ED101 is proud to announce the premiere of ED101 Engage, a series of interactive discussions with experts and the general public on key issues in the field of education.

On March 3, 2010, a bill imposing the first-ever federal oversight on the use of restraint and seclusion in schools cleared the House of Representatives, and S.2860 now awaits Senate consideration. Restraint and seclusion has long been a controversial issue, not only in schools but in settings including residential treatment and medical facilities for youth and adults, day care programs, detention centers and incarceration facilities.

Moderated by Dr. Ted Darid Mauro of ED101, our first live chat will feature guest experts Dr. Joseph B. Ryan, Associate Professor of Special Education at Clemson University and a nationally recognized researcher and speaker on behavior management and seclusion and restraint policies for schools; and Dr. Merrill Winston begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting, a board certified behavior analyst and Director of Program Development for Professional Crisis Management Association in Florida, which has trained and certified more than 70,000 teachers, therapists and human services personnel nationwide.

In an hour-long discussion, Dr. Mauro and our experts will address the pros and cons, potential solutions and best practices associated with this timely issue. In addition to prepared questions, ED101 will also solicit live participation through call-ins, Facebook and Twitter. The entire discussion will later be archived on ED101's website for online viewing.

Click here for links to ED101's social media accounts, and stay tuned for call-in and live viewing details. Engage with ED101!
